Help us Save Green Sea Turtles

As for the last 15 years, the release of the sea turtles belonging to the 2007 Initiation Program within the Sea Turtle Protection Program begins on January 21st. This event is held by Xcaret Park in conjunction with the Foundation Flora, Fauna y Cultura de Mexico, A.C.

The Initiation Program is one of the oldest programs of the park and it is in charge of safekeeping hatchlings of two nests of the sea turtles from the Chelonia Mydas species, known as the Green Sea Turtle, within the Aquarium facilities for a period of 15 months in order to later return them home, the sea.

This program has two objectives: the first one, to care for the turtle hatchlings during their first year of life, considered one of the most vulnerable stages, in order to release them into the sea when they are a little bigger and with greater chances of survival. The second objective is educational, as during their stay at the park and during the release, they provide a priceless opportunity for the visitors to be in contact with them so we can all learn and understand the need to care for this species which is currently on the list of endangered animals.

During the program’s 15 years, a total of 1,904 fifteen month old turtles have been released and in 2008 a little over 121 turtles will be liberated.

This season we want our visitors, mostly the children, to participate in the program by releasing some one year old turtles with their own hands on our beaches. If you happen to be around these days, don’t miss this one in a lifetime experience.
