    The importance of playing school

By the end of the 2006-2007 school year, Xcaret Park had hosted 8,336 pre-school, grade and middle school students from 261 state public schools, and even more are expected the coming school year. This is only part of the Xcaret Park Environmental Education and Natural and Cultural Heritage of Mexico Interpretation Program that the Park's Department of Interpretative Services has undertaken since 1996. This program fosters environmental awareness amongst children through fun extracurricular activities.

The program consists of a broad array of artistic activities, such as guided tours, seasonal exhibits, beach clean-up campaigns, creation of graphic materials like triptychs, educational materials specially designed for children, and workshops with entertaining activities, talks with different sectors of society (schools, civil associations, churches, etc.) and environmental awareness messages published in the media.

Some 100 public school children from the state of Quintana Roo attend Xcaret Park workshops every day. To date some 155,000 students have participated in the program.

Xcaret's program has received the support of the Quintana Roo State Department of Education and Culture (SEYC), which receives school applications and sends them on to the park, for over ten years. This relationship was finally formalized in May 2007, when the State Secretary of Public Education, Professor Ma. de Guadalupe Novelo Espadas, and Architect Miguel Quintana Pali, General Director of Xcaret Park, signed an official Collaboration Agreement.
