The Sacred Mayan Journey 2009

6:00 - 6:15 p.m. Exhibition of modern Mayan products: "Mayas yesterday and today: manufacturers, artisans and merchants" The Esplanade (next to the Pre-Hispanic Ball Game Court) An exhibit of modern-day Mayan products, with fair trade products that have been used since Late Post-Classic times. A cultural legacy.
6:15 - 8:15 p.m. A tour of the interactive pre-Hispanic Mayan market. "Mayans and Trade: The Kii'wik, a journey to the past." Mayan Market (access through the market, in front of the tortilla shop, and on to the school.) A space where you can interact with products and people, much as the ancient Maya might have done. Here, you can see typical articles of the day: merchants bartering for cotton blankets, jade, feathers, copal incense, fruit, honey and cacao seeds, amongst others. The mix of colors, aromas and flavors of our Ancient Mexico; an important player in the ocean trade routes and the point of departure for Cozumel, site of the goddess Ixchel's temple.
  The blessing of oarsmen and their families with incense. To one side of the Jaguar Island.  
8:30 - 8:50 p.m. Inaugural Ceremony Dos Playas Bay  
8:50 p.m. Stage presentation of: "Polé fishing village" ( Part 1) Dos Playas Bay Initiation of Kanich and the oarsmen, trip to what might have been long-ago Polé. Ancient rituals, ceremonies, purification and dances in honor of Ixchel.
9:30-11:00 p.m. Expo-sale of contemporary Mayan products The Esplanade (next to the Pre-Hispanic Ball Game Court)  
Friday, May 22nd

5:00 a.m. Ritual send-off, blessing with incense. Dos Playas, Xcaret  
5:30 a.m. Stage presentation of: "Polé fishing village" (Part 2) Dos Playas, Xcaret Send-off at first Light. Ceremony to wish the oarsmen--the messengers of the Bataoobs of Polé-Xcaret and Xamanhá-Playa del Carmen—a safe voyage to Cuzamil-Cozumel.
6:00 a.m. Launch of the canoes Dos Playas, Xcaret  
6:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Crossing from Xcaret to Cozumel    
12:00 p.m. Gathering of the fleet (canoes). Playa Caletita, Cozumel  
12:30 - 3:00 p.m. Arrival of oarsmen: "Playa de Cuzamil, arrival of the oarsmen" (Part 3) Playa Casitas, Cozumel Arrival of canoes at Cuzamil-Cozumel. Islanders receive the travelers, comforting them with refreshment and food.
8:00 - 8:45 p.m. Stage presentation: "The Oracle of Ixchel; Chankanaab at night " (Part 4) Chankanaab Park Oarsmen present offerings and petitions to Ixchel. The Oracle's message and worship.
Saturday, May 23rd
Schedule Activity Place Description
5:30 a.m. Ceremony "Blessings on the seamen for a safe voyage to Xamanhá" (Part 5). Chankanaab Park Send-off at first Light. Ceremony guided by the Chilam of Cozumel and his entourage to wish the seamen a safe voyage to Xamanhá-Playa del Carmen.
06:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Cozumel - Playa del Carmen crossing    
  Gathering of the fleet (canoes). In front of Xcaret  
1:00 - 3:00 p.m. "Arrival and delivery of message to the people of Xamanhá" (Part 6). Playa Fundadores, Playa del Carmen Arrival of seamen at Xamanhá, welcomed by the Bataoobs from Polé-Xcaret and Xamanhá-Playa del Carmen. Oarsmen-messengers deliver Ixchel's message to the people of Xamanhá. Joyous dances for the recently arrived seamen and to thank the goddess Ixchel.
3:00 p.m. Closing Ceremony of the Sacred Mayan Journey 2009 Playa Fundadores, Playa del Carmen  

We invite all participants who arrive before the canoes are launched (6:00 a.m.) to stay at the Park and enjoy a day at Xcaret.
