History of Xcaret Cancun
With the idea of creating a tourist development that would add to the attractions of the Cancun and Cozumel Cancun region, a group of Mexican entrepreneurs purchased the land surrounding Xcaret eco park, Mayan word that means `small inlet`.
In 1984, Architect Miguel Quintana Pali, captivated by the Xcaret Cancun‘s site natural beauty characteristic of the Xcaret Maya region, purchased about 12 acres of this land from the group, with the idea of building his dream house near Cozumel Cancun.
However, when he began to clear the Xcaret eco park land, he started uncovering ancient Mayan cenotes, sinkholes formed by cave ceilings that collapsed after 3 million years of underground rivers erosion. Awed by this magnificent sight representative of the Xcaret Maya region, he felt that so much beauty should not be accessible only to a privileged few, but should be available for the people of Cancun, Mexico and the world to enjoy.
This way, Quintana began to formulate the basic idea of Xcaret eco park in Cancun, a natural park open to the public and filled with all the Xcaret Maya expressions of culture, nature and beauty. Later he joined forces with Oscar, Marcos and Carlos Constandse, and soon they transformed this great project into a dream come true: Xcaret Cancun.
