Sculptures
All around Xcaret park you can run into them: they’re not only rocks, but works of art. It’s the labor of Xikin-ch’o, the sculptor at Xcaret.
Xikin-ch’o, or “mouse ears” in Maya, it’s actually Federico Cantú, son and grandson of sculptors. Federico collaborates with Xcaret since 1995, contributing to the exaltation of Mayan art and culture, while he adds to the beauty of our Park.
Federico relates that his work in direct sculpting was influenced by his grandfather’s way of sculpting, drawing on the rock with charcoal and using the relief technique. He’s also proud of having found a use for the deforestation caused by hurricanes, creating what he calls “pepenart”.
Federico speaks a little bit of Maya and sculpts unique pieces with a symbolic content. He defines himself as creative-active, in love with sculpting in stone. You can admire his creativity in the most unexpected places in the park: a jaguar warrior, a deer haunted by a puma, a dog sleeping under a bench, a serpent incense holder, Kukulcán’s head, a water mirror with obsidian, X’pol, the Polé village matriarch, among many others.
We invite you to be an observer and discover for yourself these artistic treasures of Xcaret. Because, as Federico says: stones are forever.
